One day workshop in Hawke’s Bay

Our trustee, Rob McGowan, has organised a fantastic workshop in Hawke’s Bay on Tuesday, 29th January. This will be an excellent one-day workshop on planting and managing native trees to support environmental sustainability. Spaces are limited and you need to register by this Wednesday (23rd) so don’t delay!

Totara Industry Pilot Project

An excellent stand of farm tōtara trees recently assessed by Paul Quinlan as part of the Totara Industry Pilot Project.
The sample plot values for this stand estimates a merchantable timber volume per hectare of 390m3, with a stocking rate of 340 stems/ha (of trees with diameters at breast height (DBH) above 30cm), and with a mean DBH of 45cm.
Many trees have 10-14m of merchantable bole length. Small areas of such high-quality regenerated trees present an excellent opportunity for sustainable forest management.

The Northland Totara Industry Pilot Project is a collaborative project with MPI, Scion, Tane’s Tree Trust, Northland Inc. and Te Taitokerau Maori Forestry Collective with “He tōtara tuturu - He iwi tū tonu (Sturdy tōtara - sustainable communities)” as their vision statement.

Sustained Yield Beech Management - Canterbury and West Coast

Itinerary:

Saturday 24th -

9am Drive from Christchurch airport to Oxford. Meet up with anyone joining in their own car

10am Drive to John Wardle’s property, a continuous cover beech and pine operation

1pm Drive to Greymouth with a stop at Mt White Bridge – view mountain beech forest

4.30pm AGM at The Ashley Hotel conference room, including presentations

Sunday 25th -

8am Drive to Ken Ferguson’s Gray Valley farm, a large sheep and beef farm with sustainably managed beech

- With stops at kahikatea/matai remnant stand, clear fell regeneration and thinning site and large wind throw recovery site

11am Leave for Reefton to visit NZSFP Mill site – timber and veneer operation

1.30pm Drive to Christchurch via Lewis Pass

4.30pm Arrive at Christchurch airport

NB: all times are approximate, except the meeting time in Oxford on Saturday at 10am
