Indigenous tree bulletin series

Project status: Completed

Tāne’s Tree Trust has collaborated with research providers Scion and Landcare Research, councils and other interest groups in the publication of 6 bulletins on the ecology, establishment and management of native trees. While the focus is on the option of managing planted and naturally regenerating stands of native forest species, there are a wide range of objectives and site types where the planting of native tree species can be appropriate in our productive landscapes. Bulletins cover the following species and subject areas – growth and management of totara, kauri, pohutukawa and the beeches; general guide on establishment of native trees; and native trees on farms.

The bulletins published to date are:

  • Bergin, D.O. 2003: Totara establishment, growth and management. New Zealand Indigenous Tree Bulletin No. 1. New Zealand Forest Research Institute. 40p.
  • Bergin, D.O.; Steward, G.A. 2004: Kauri ecology, establishment, growth and management. New Zealand Indigenous Tree Bulletin No. 2. New Zealand Forest Research Institute. 48p.

Funding support

The bulletin series has been funded from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s Sustainable Farming Fund, and the Diverse Species Programme at Scion via Future Forests Research. The New Zealand Forest Owners Association and Forest Industries Training and Education Council have provided funding for reprinting. Information, peer review and in-kind support has been received from the NZ Institute of Forestry and the NZ Farm Forestry Association.
